The estate of author Ernest Hemingway has agreed to let Universal adapt the novel TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT. The film will be written and directed by Tod "Kip" Williams (THE ADVENTURES OF SEBASTIAN COLE) and will star Benicio Del Toro. This version will remain much more faithful to the novel than the 1945 Howard Hawks film starring Humphrey Bogart.
In TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT, Del Toro will play a fisherman in the Florida Keys who isn't making enough money to feed his family and out of desperation becomes involved with unsavory smugglers. It is likely that the Caribbean will be the focal point of the smuggling. (Story courtesy of VARIETY)
